Unity:
Order, wholeness.
Harmony:
The employment of the elements of art to create a sense of unity.
Variety:
Diversity, this doesn’t always undermine the unity of a work but it can be designed to.
Compositional unity:
the visual aspects of a work are organised.
They are: simplicity, repetition and proximity.
Conceptual unity:
The sense that there is an idea behind an artwork.
Gestalt unity:
The whole is more than some of its parts.
Conceptual and compositional unity work together to create it.
Variety:
Can be opposed to unity and harmony, designed to disturb but if it succeeds the work may have conceptual unity.
Can be about visual interest e.g. small changes within a larger pattern creating a point of interest.
