what is newtons second law
F=ma (or F=mg)
What are the two masses in this experiment
mc= mass of a pasco smart cart
mh= hanging mass
and both masses are attached (so both are going the accelerated the same rate)(mc+mh)
bc the masses are attached to each other by a string, gravity acts on the hanger
f is constant bc the only accelerating force is gravity pulling the hanging mass down
a inc when total ass dec (inversely propotional)

Wat are we doing in the second set of measurements
you will use a near frictionless inclined plane
net force on the inclined plane will be
parallel 1

what are we using to take measurements in todays lab
pasco’s wireless smart carts
theyre nearly frictionless, minimizing the influence of the external environment on measurements
The essential pices of this setup are
the cart connected by a string to a weight hanging off the edge off the table over a pulley
4-250 g (abt) will be added to the cart to measure a vs mc for fixed F
5g hanger will provide the force
string attached to the cart post goes over the pulley and attaches to the hanger
additional weight may be added to inc force `
what will we use for mass measurements
a scale
what are the 2 censors on the cart that help with measuring accel
the position sensor
acceleration sensor
the position sensor
determines distance cart moved based on wheel rotation
functions like speedometer and odometer in most cars
capstone allows you to plot postion, vel, accel from the built in position sensor
numerical derivative
the velocity and accel plotted are derived from the raw position data , to avoid the errors, we will only examine poaition vs time data
acceleration sensor
directly measures the accel of the cart in any firection
compare the accel produced by the accel sensor to that found by use of the position sensor
force sensor
directly measures the force applied to the cart
connected to the hook attached to the front of the cart
so any pushing and pulling wilml be recorded
can only measure forces parallel to the tract
first step
level the angle to 0
