New cards

What organ is this? (Purple arrow) What is its function?

Spleen: Filters the blood of old/aged RBCs

2
New cards

Where does newly filtered blood in the spleen exit?

At its Hilum via splenic vein. (Splenic vein fuses with superior mesenteric vein and forms hepatic portal vein)

3
New cards

What structure is the pink arrow pointing to?

Splenic vein

4
New cards

What is the green arrow pointing to? What is the red outlining?

Splenic artery

Red outline: Hilum

5
New cards

What organ is this?

What is the pink arrow pointing to?

What is T?What is the function?

What is R? What is the function:

What is the Purple areas? What does it do?

Organ: Spleen

Pink Arrow: Capsule

T: Trabeculae- give spleen internal supportive framework

R: Red pulp (blood sinusoids) ( everything that isn’t white pulp)- filters red blood cells

Purple areas: White pulp(lymphatic follicles), involved in activating immune response

6
New cards

What organ is this?

What is the purple areas? What surrounds the purple areas

What are the inward extensions?

Organ:Spleen

Purple areas: White pulp

Surrounding: Red pulp

Inward extensions: Trabeculae

7
New cards
  1. In general, what are the arrows pointing to? Function?

  2. What is the purple arrow?

  3. What is the blue arrow?

  4. What is the red arrow?

For each, identify its location.

  1. Tonsils - rich in lymphocytes and help defend against inhaled and ingested microorganisms

  2. Lingual tonsil (root of tongue)

  3. Palatine tonsil (lateral wall of oropharynx)

  4. pharyngeal tonsil (posterior wall of nasopharynx)

8
New cards

What is this a histology picture of?

What is the red arrow pointing to?(white spaces) Function?

What is the blue arrow pointing to?

Where is the capsule located?

Picture of: Tonsil

Red Arrow: Tonsillar crypts- Traps inhaled/ingested microorganisms

Blue arrow: Capsule- deep

9
New cards

Is the capsule of a tonsil complete or incomplete? Why?

The capsule of a tonsil is incomplete (it does not totally enclose the tonsil)

Because the portion of the tonsil exposed to the pharynz will be lined by an epithelium

10
New cards

What is this?

What is: a,b,c,d,e,f

Structure: Lingual tonsil

a: stratified squamous epithelium

b: tonsillar crypt

c: germinal center of lymphoid follicle

d: mantle zone

e: lymphoid follicle

f: incomplete capsule

11
New cards

What are these?

In what direction does lymph flow?

Red arrow? Function?

Blue Arrow? Function?

Purple arrow? Function?

Structures: inguinal lymph nodes

Lymph flows superiorly

Red: Lymph node- filters lymph on its way back to the blood stream

Blue: Afferent lymphatic vessel- takes lymph towards a particular lymph node

Purple: efferent lymphatic vessel- take lymph away from a particular lymph node

12
New cards

What is this a model of?

Label the following:

Red

Purple

Blue (outer region)

Pink outline (inner region)

Structure: Lymph node

Red: CT Capsule

Purple: Trabeculae

Blue: cortex

Pink outline: medulla

13
New cards

What is this a picture of?

What is the blue arrow pointing at?

What is the pink arrow pointing at?

What is the indentation near the pink arrow called?

Lymph node

Blue arrow: afferent lymphatic vessel

Pink Arrow: Efferent lymphatic vessels (with their valves)

Indentation region: Hilum

14
New cards

What is the function of valves?

Prevents backflow

15
New cards

What is this a picture of?

What is the red arrow?

Structure: Lymph node

Red Arrow: Capsule (composed of dense irregular connective tissue)

16
New cards

What structure is this?

Red arrow?

Blue arrow?

Lymph node

Red arrow: Sinuses ( spaces for lymph flow)

Blue arrow: Cortex (outer portion of the node)- high density of lymphocytes

17
New cards

What structure is this?

What is the pink arrow?

Blue arrow:

Red arrow pointing at?

Structure: Lymph node

Pink:medulla (inner portion of node)

Blue arrow: cord (narrow clumps of lymphocytes)

Red: Sinuses

18
