Provincial Level of Government

Municipal Level of Government

Prime Minister

The head of the federal government.

Parliament

Canada's federal law-making institution, consisting of the Monarch, Senate, and House of Commons.

House of Commons

The elected body where Members of Parliament debate and vote on federal laws.

MP

Member of Parliament; represents a federal riding.

Senate

The upper chamber of Parliament where appointed senators review and vote on laws.

Governor General

The King's representative in Canada who holds constitutional and ceremonial duties.

Premier

The head of Ontario's provincial government.

Legislative Assembly of Ontario

Ontario's elected law-making body.

MPP

Member of Provincial Parliament; represents a provincial electoral district.

Mayor

The elected head of a municipal government.

City/Town Council

Elected local representatives who make local decisions and bylaws.

Legislative Branch

The branch of government that makes laws.

Executive Branch

The branch of government that carries out and administers laws and government decisions.

Judicial Branch

The branch of government that interprets laws and applies them to cases.
