Filgrastim
Neutropenia drug; G-CSF that increases neutrophil production. Major adverse effect: bone pain. Give at least 24 hr after chemotherapy.
Vinblastine
Vinca alkaloid that inhibits mitosis; strongly associated with Hodgkin lymphoma. Think: BLAST Hodgkin with vinBLASTine.
Vincristine
Vinca alkaloid that inhibits mitosis; used in leukemia/lymphoma. Major dose-limiting toxicity: neurotoxicity.
Vinca alkaloids
Mitotic inhibitors that prevent cancer cells from completing cell division.
Antitumor antibiotics
Bind/interfere with DNA. Major toxicity: cardiac toxicity.
Dexrazoxane
Helps reduce cardiac damage from antitumor antibiotics.
corticosteriods
Suppress lymphocyte division; used in leukemia and lymphoma. Long-term use can cause Cushing syndrome manifestations.
Antimetabolites
Disrupt materials cancer cells need for DNA/RNA production and cell growth.
Purine/Pyrimidine analogs
Interfere with DNA and RNA synthesis/function.
Alkylating agents
Bind/change DNA and prevent cell division; powerful immunosuppressants.
Targeted therapy
Blocks a specific cancer target involved in growthprogresssion or survival
Monoclonal antibodies (MABs)
Bind specific target cells; cancer cells may die or be marked for immune destruction.
Ferrous sulfate
Iron replacement used for iron-deficiency anemia. Can cause dark stools and constipation; avoid antacids.
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
Helps increase iron absorption.
Deferoxamine
Antidote used for iron toxicity/overdose.
Cyanocobalamin
Vitamin B12 replacement used for pernicious anemia/B12 deficiency.
Rituximab + corticosteroids
Used in autoimmune hemolytic anemia to decrease immune destruction of RBCs.
Hydroxyurea
Antimetabolite used in sickle cell disease; reduces RBC deformity/sickling. Major risk: myelosuppression.
L-glutamine
Reduces oxidative stress and helps RBC flexibility in sickle cell disease; can reduce vaso-occlusive crises.
Crizanlizumab (Adakveo)
Monoclonal antibody that blocks P-selectin
Casgevy / Lyfgenia
Gene therapies for sickle cell disease using the patient's own modified stem cells.
Deferasirox
Iron chelator for transfusion-related iron overload in thalassemia. Watch liver/kidney injury and GI bleeding.
Deferiprone
Iron chelator for iron overload in thalassemia. Major risk: agranulocytosis/neutropenia.
Mitapivat (Pyrukynd)
Increases pyruvate kinase activity, improving RBC energy/lifespan and reducing
hemolysis
Luspatercept-aamt
Erythroid maturation agent used in beta-thalassemia; helps increase RBCs. Watch for clots and bone pain.
Luspatercept-aamt
Erythroid maturation agent used in beta-thalassemia; helps increase RBCs. Watch for clots and bone pain
Betibeglogene (Zynteglo
Gene therapy for beta-thalassemia using the patient's modified stem cells to produce functional hemoglobin
Therapeutic phlebotomy
First-line treatment for polycythemia vera; removes blood to reduce RBC mass and blood viscosity
low dose aspirin
used in polycthemia vera to help reduce clotting risk
Ropeginterferon alfa-2b-njft
(BESREMi)
Cytoreductive therapy for polycythemia vera; reduces bone-marrow overproduction of
cells.
Ruxolitinib (Jakafi)
Targeted therapy for polycythemia vera that blocks JAK signaling to control RBC
production. Monitor CBC and infection risk
