75%

13
New cards

T/F the cervix can also be problematic if if cannot relax properly, such as with excess scarring.

True

14
New cards

When do you typically see the cervix being an issue when it comes to being a good physical barrier?

during estrus (you lose the physical tone of the cervix)

15
New cards

Why do equine vets recommend tying the placenta up above the level of the hocks?

retained placentas also place the mares at risk for EM that may lead to life threatening things such as endotoxemia and laminitis and the placenta can also act as a wick for bacteria into the cervix

16
New cards

What do you need to make sure happens to the stallion during the breeding process?

-Wash

-Culture

-Antibiotics in extender

17
New cards

Stallions can harbor bacteria on their ___ and ___ and can contaminate mares physically during live cover breeding, or through artificial insemination if the bacteria is in the semen

penis, sheath

18
New cards

Stallions should be washed with warm water prior to breeding, even in a live cover breeding program. Is the meant to sterilize the penis?

no, just meant to remove gross debris

19
New cards

To (decrease/increase) the bacterial load in semen, most extenders contain antibiotics that help eliminate this source of bacterial contamination in the mare

decrease

20
New cards

T/F Mares that are susceptible to EM associated with breeding tend to have a problem with decreased uterine clearance which is a major cause of recurrent EM.

True

21
New cards

If there is decreased clearance post breeding, what are TWO things that can happen because of this?

•Dependent (saggy) uterus

•Suboptimal myometrial contractions

22
New cards

perineal area

23
New cards

T/F Veterinarians can cause endometritis

True

24
New cards

How should you clean the perineal area?

- Proper cleaning technique needs to include an antibacterial soap such as betadine or nolvasan.

- The tail needs to be secured out of the way, ideally with a tail bag. The scrub needs to be a sterile scrub starting at the vulvar lips and extending outwards.

- This should be repeated at least 3 times for a contact time of at least 5 min. The area then needs to be dried, starting at the vulvar lips.

- Any water left from cleaning can drip into the vulva or onto your sterile sleeve and carry bacteria with it.

25
New cards

this mare, the ___ ___ has a tremendous amount of debris, which, if not cleaned, can be unknowingly carried into the uterus

clittoral fossa

26

- bacteria

39
New cards

What are the limits of doing cytology alone? Why?

negative cytology does not rule out endometritis. This is because sometimes there can be a deep and chronic infection or sample technique

44
New cards

Will a biopsy tell you what bacteria is in there?

no

45
New cards

If a mare has a grade III biopsy, does this mean that she cant get pregnant?

no, it means that she is less likely to carry the foal to term

46
New cards

If you get a slide back and you can see neutrophils heading towars the lumen of the uterus, what does this tell you?

there is an acute infection because they are actively trying to get into the uterus to kill something
