Ischemic Stroke
Most common- 85 percent of strokes
blockage of a brain blood vessel
Thrombotic stroke: clot forms in brain artery
Embolic stroke: clot forms somewhere else and travels to brain
Hemorrhagic Stroke
15 percent of strokes
Caused from rupture of a blood vessel- bleeding in/around brain
Intracerebral: bleeding into brain tissue
Subarachnoid: bleeding into fluid space around brain
MCA- Middle Cerebral Artery
face/arm weakness; speech and language problems
ACA- Anterior Cerebral Artery
leg weakness, incotinence, personality/behavior changes
PCA- Posterior Cerebral Artery
vision loss, memory problems
Stroke Warning Signs
FAST:
Face droop, Arm weakness, Speech Difficulty, Timing
Modifiable risk factors
hypertension, smoking, obesity, poor diet, inactivity, diabetes, alcohol/ drugs, heart disease, apolipoproteins
Non-modifiable risk factors
age, sex/gender, ethnicity, genetics
OT Role in Stroke
restore ADLs, motor and cognitive functions, and adaptive equipment
CIMT- constraint induced movement therapy
prevent shoulder subluxation by positioning and taping
adress psychological issues, coping, and role changes
