An ion that helps maintain pH balance in the body.
General Dietary Requirements for Electrolytes
Most electrolytes need to be consumed in small amounts; excessive intake leads to increased excretion via kidneys.
Na-K ATP-ase Pump
A pump that moves sodium out and potassium into cells to maintain cellular function.
Aldosterone
A hormone that regulates sodium reabsorption in the kidneys.
Hyponatremia
A condition characterized by low sodium levels in the blood.
Hypernatremia
A condition characterized by high sodium levels in the blood.

Kidney disorder causing large amounts of protein loss and edema.
Hepatic Cirrhosis
Liver disease that affects fluid balance and may lead to hyponatremia.
Congestive Heart Failure
A condition that can cause fluid retention and changes in sodium balance.

Loss of sodium due to vomiting or diarrhea.
