What is the Evidence of the cognitive approach? (EARNED ABS)

Bartlet shows that memory is reconstructive with the use of peoples schemas, where infomation is filling in the gaps with contextual knowledge.

Loftus and Palmer shows that often, asking leading questions during an interview may affect eye witness testimony

What are the Approaches in the cognitive approach? (nomothetic/idiographic) (EARNED ABS)

Cognitive approach applies to both nomothetic and idiographic, as it establishes universal laws on mental processing of infomation (nomothetic), whilst there are also different case studies that are analysed and are specific to the individual. (idiographic)

3

What is Reductionist about the cognitive approach? (EARNED ABS)

It does not take biological factors into account, it is also machine reductionist as it simplifies human behaviour to a computer process, not taking into account other factors such as emotion.

4
New cards

Does the cognitive approach take both sides of the nature/nurture arguement?

Cognitive approach does take into account both nature and nurture, as we are born with natural schemas to survive as an infant, aswell as learning new schemas to adapt to survival as we grow up.

5
New cards

Is the cognitive approach ethical? (EARNED ABS)

Tulving’s gold isotope study was unethical, as injecting gold isotopes into participants may affect their health after the experiment is completed, as there is no way to remove it from the body, which may perhaps give them side effects.

6
New cards

Is the cognitive approach determinism? (EARNED ABS)

It uses soft determinism, as the human cognitive system works with what we already know, aswell as having the free will of self to choose to respond to an incoming stimulus.

How can the cognitive approach be applied to every day life? (EARNED ABS)

Can be used to treat depression (CBT) and help clients to challenge negative schemas and belief. (Becks negative triad)

Cognitive interviews can be used to challenge eye witness testimony, as knowledge of events can be inaccurate due to reconstructive memory, using tactics such as reinstating the context, reversing the event order, and looking from different perspectives.

How can the cognitive approach be scientific? (EARNED ABS)

Cognitive neuroscience can be used to link mental processes with different parts of the brain (localisation of function) such as fMRI, MRI and PET scans. This strengthens psychology as a science as it once was not classified as a real science.
