Organic Chemistry
The branch of chemistry devoted to the study of carbon-based compounds derived from living sources, along with their synthetic derivatives.
Hydrocarbons
Organic chemical compounds composed exclusively of carbon and hydrogen atoms.
Alkanes
Saturated hydrocarbons containing only single carbon-carbon and carbon-hydrogen covalent bonds, characterized by the general molecular formula CnH2n+2.
Constitutional Isomers
Compounds that share the exact same molecular formula but differ in the connectivity or bonding order of their constituent atoms.
Substituents
Atoms or groups of atoms that branch off from the main parent hydrocarbon chain, named by combining the chain prefix with the suffix "-yl".
Isobutyl Group
A four-carbon branched alkyl substituent with the structure −CH2CH(CH3)2, notable because its name is alphabetized under the letter "i" rather than "b".
Cycloalkanes
Saturated hydrocarbons that contain one or more closed rings of carbon atoms, represented by the general molecular formula CnH2n.
Angle Strain
The structural strain and thermodynamic instability produced when bond angles deviate from the optimal tetrahedral angle of 109.5∘, prominent in 3- and 4-membered rings.

Cyclopropane
A highly strained three-membered ring cycloalkane (C3H6) whose internal carbon-carbon bond angles are compressed to approximately 60∘.

Newman Projection
A structural visualization method that views a molecule directly down a specific carbon-carbon bond axis to examine spatial conformational relationships.
Staggered Conformation
A spatial arrangement around a single carbon-carbon bond where bonds on adjacent atoms are separated by a 60∘ dihedral angle, minimizing electron repulsion and representing the lowest potential energy conformer.
Eclipsed Conformation
A spatial arrangement around a single carbon-carbon bond where the bonds and substituents on adjacent atoms directly align with one another (0∘ dihedral angle), maximizing torsional energy.
Torsional Energy Barrier in Ethane
The potential energy difference of 2.9 kcal/mol (12 kJ/mol) required to rotate ethane between its lowest-energy staggered conformation and highest-energy eclipsed conformation.

Steric Strain
The destabilizing repulsion that occurs when the electron clouds of two non-bonded atoms or groups are forced too close together in space.
Chair Conformation
The most stable, strain-free conformation of cyclohexane, featuring carbon-carbon bond angles of approximately 111∘ and completely staggered adjacent carbon-hydrogen bonds.
Axial Bonds
Six bond positions on a cyclohexane chair conformer that point directly vertical—either straight up or straight down—parallel to the ring axis.
Equatorial Bonds
Six bond positions on a cyclohexane chair conformer that extend outward along the perimeter or equator of the ring, remaining roughly parallel to ring bonds.
Boat Conformation of Cyclohexane
A higher-energy conformation of cyclohexane destabilized by eclipsed carbon-hydrogen bonds along its sides and steric repulsion between the flagpole hydrogens.

Ring Flip
The conformational interconversion between two cyclohexane chair forms, during which all previously axial substituents become equatorial and all equatorial substituents become axial.
1,3-Diaxial Interactions
Steric strain arising in chair cyclohexane when an axial substituent experiences repulsive interactions with the axial hydrogens located two carbons away (at carbon 3 and carbon 5).

cis-Isomer (in Cycloalkanes)
A stereoisomeric configuration in which two substituents are attached to the same geometric side or face of a cycloalkane ring.

trans-Isomer (in Cycloalkanes)
A stereoisomeric configuration in which two substituents are attached on opposite sides or faces of a cycloalkane ring.
