WHAT IS NATIONAL SELF DETERMINATION?

  • When people pursue national self-determination, they are trying to gain - or keep - the power to control their own affairs.

  • They want to make their own decisions about what is in their national interest

  • Sometimes this means becoming a sovereign nation but that is not always the case.

  • Pursuing national self-determination can have both POSITIVE and
    NEGATIVE effects.

KOSOVO

  • Had been a province of Serbia until 2008 when it declared independence (Originally part of Yugoslavia which split in the 90's)

  • Due to ethnic tensions between Albanians (Muslims) and Serbians (Christians)

  • Albanian Kosovars wanted independence

  • Serbs and Serbian Kosovars (the minority) did not because they felt it would mean losing part of their country - an independent Kosovo threatened Serbian sovereignty

  • For some time, many UN members did NOT recognize Kosovo's independence

  • Canada was one of these countries - many believe it was because we were afraid of what recognizing their independence would do to the Quebec sovereigntists.
