Generation
Convert another form of energy into electrical energy
Transmission
Transports large amounts of electrical power over long distances.
Distribution
Deliver electricity to individual buildings
Solar Photovoltaics
Converts sunlight directly into
electricity using semiconductor materials.
Concentrated Solar Power
Uses parabolic mirrors that follow the sun (called heliostats) and focus the solar energy to a central collector. This collector heats a medium, which then turns a turbine connected to a generator.
Step down transformer
A step-up transformer lowers the voltage before the power enters the transmission network.
Step Up Transformers
A step-up transformer raises the voltage before the power enters the transmission network.
Circuit Breaker
Interrupt current under specified operating and fault conditions.
Disconnect Switches
Provide isolation of equipment; they generally are not intended to interrupt fault current.
Busbars
Common conductive connections joining
circuits and equipment. Metal bar
Protective relays
Monitor electrical quantities and command circuit breakers to operate when abnormal conditions are detected
Instrument transformers
Current transformers (CTs) and voltage transformers (VTs) provide scaled signals for metering and protection
Capacitor banks and reactors
Help manage reactive power and voltage.
A typical transformer used in a building is rated in
kVA
Isolation Transformer
Provides galvanic isolation between the primary and secondary circuits to protect users from electric shock and suppress electrical noise
L1 or L2
Underground (hot) conductor
Neutral
Center-tap conductor
Two-pole Breaker
Connects 240V Loads
Single-pole Breaker
Connects 120V loads
Wye Configuration
One end of each phase winding connects to a common point called the neutral point. The other end connects to a line conductor. Voltage splits
Delta Configuration
the three phase windings connect end-to-end to form a closed loop. The line conductors connect at the three
junctions. Current splits
Service Disconnect
Disconnects the building's electrical installation from the utility supply.
Main overcurrent protection
Protects the service conductors and equipment as required.
Fuse
Opens the circuit when its internal elements melt in response to sufficient current over time.
Ground Fault
Occurs when an energized conductor makes an unintended electrical connection to grounded metal or another grounded part
Grounding
Connects the electrical system to earth.
Bonding
Connects conductive parts together.
The NEC article that covers grounding and bonding is NEC
250
Which is not a part of a typical grounding system?
Incoming gas service
What typically handles the most current in a system?
Switchboard
