Enrollment requirements and documents review
Student pilot certificate, government photo ID, medical certificate, and any required endorsements.
Student Pilot Limitations
May not carry passengers, may not fly for compensation or hire.
Pilot Logbook / Record Keeping / Endorsements
Log all flight time (date, total time, aircraft, conditions.) Student pilots need specific CFI endorsements for solo, solo cross-country, and specific airports/airspace.
Student Pilot / Private Pilot currency, privileges, and limitations
Student: Limited to training flights with instructor or solo with endorsements; no passengers.
Private: May carry passengers, fly day/night VFR, and fly for personal reasons (not for hire). Currency: 3 takeoffs/landings in 90 days to carry passengers; night currency requires 3 full-stop night landings in 90 days.
Proficiency Vs Currency
Currency = legal minimums (3 landings in 90 days)
Proficiency = actual skill level needed to fly safely. You can be current but not proficient.
Personal documents when flying an aircraft
Pilot certificate, medical certificate (or BasicMed documents), and government-issued photo ID. (Logbook is not required to be carried, but endorsements must be available if requested.)
Medical certificates (Classes, duration, and requirements)
1st Class: 12 months under 40 / 6 months 40+
2nd Class: 12 months
3rd Class: 60 months under 40 / 24 months 40+
(Student pilots typically need at least a 3rd Class.)
Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM)
A systematic approach to the mental process used by pilots.
