9 Translation

πρῶτον μὲν οὖν, ὦ ἄνδρες

First therefore, gentlemen

 (δεῖ γὰρ καὶ ταῦθ᾽ ὑμῖν διηγήσασθαι)

 (for it is necessary also to explain these things to you),

οἰκίδιον ἔστι μοι διπλοῦν

my little house is on two floors,

ἴσα ἔχον τὰ ἄνω τοῖς κάτω κατὰ τὴν γυναικωνῖτιν καὶ κατὰ τὴν ἀνδρωνῖτιν

having the upstairs equal to the downstairs

κατὰ τὴν γυναικωνῖτιν καὶ κατὰ τὴν ἀνδρωνῖτιν.

corresponding to the women's quarters and the men's quarters.

ἐπειδὴ δὲ τὸ παιδίον ἐγένετο ἡμῖν

And when our baby was born

ἡ μήτηρ αὐτὸ ἐθήλαζεν·

 his mother breastfed it;

 ἵνα δὲ μὴ, ὁπότε λοῦσθαι δέοι, κινδυνεύῃ κατὰ τῆς κλίμακος καταβαίνουσα,

and so that she would not be in danger while going down the stairs whenever it needed to be washed,

ἐγὼ μὲν ἄνω διητώμην, αἱ δὲ γυναῖκες κάτω.

I lived upstairs and the women downstairs.
