Types of Plates: Oceanic and Continental

•Oceanic plates lie primarily under the ocean.

• Continental plates contain continents. 

Divergent plates boundary

• 2 plates are moving apart.

• This often occurs in the middle of the ocean

Divergent plates boundary

When this plate boundary happen on land, it make a rift valley as the plates pull apart

Convergent plate boundaries

• 2 plates = moving towards each other.

• If oceanic crust collides w 0 continental crust:

• oceanic crust = denser + is subducted into the mantle + melt

• The melted material mix w volatile gases, which force it to the surface + make some of the most explosive volcanoes.

• when plate sink into mantle - it melt to make magma -

• The pressure of magma build up under Earth’s surface

• The magma escape thru weaknesses in the rock and rise up(volcano)

Convergent boundaries: Continental

• 2 continental plate can move toward each other (aka collision boundary)

• if 2 plate get stuck on each other - pressure can build up. When plate snap past each other ➡cause powerful earthquake

Convergent boundaries: Oceanic

•Ocean verses Ocean: the denser plate will subduct under the plate that is less dense, creating deep-sea trench at the point of subduction.

• ❌ volcanoes but earthquake = be very destructive - plate get stuck as they slide past each other + pressure builds up + when plate snap energy = released + earthquake happen
