Anatomical Position
A common frame of reference in which the body is standing upright, feet shoulder-width apart, upper limbs at the sides of the trunk, and head and palms facing forward.
Anterior (Ventral)
Directional term referring to toward the front of the body or body part.

Inferior (Caudal)
Directional term meaning away from the head or toward the tail; applied only to positions on the head, neck, and trunk.
Proximal
Directional term describing a limb structure that is closer to the point of origin (shoulder joint for upper limbs, hip joint for lower limbs).
Distal
Directional term describing a limb structure that is farther away or distant from the point of origin.
Medial
Directional term meaning closer to the body's midline.
Lateral
Directional term meaning farther away from the body's midline.
Superficial
Directional term referring to structures closer to the surface of the body.
Deep
Directional term referring to structures farther away from the surface of the body.

Planes of Section
Means of studying body form and function by dividing the body or a body part into sections for examination (sagittal, frontal, or transverse).
Sagittal Plane
A plane of section that divides the body or body part into right and left sections.
Midsagittal Plane
A plane of section (also called median plane) that divides the body or body part into equal left and right sections.
Parasagittal Plane
A plane of section that divides the body or body part into unequal right and left sections.
Frontal Plane
A plane of section (also called coronal plane) that divides the body or body part into anterior and posterior sections.
Transverse Plane
A plane of section (also called horizontal plane or cross section) that divides the body or body part into superior and inferior sections.

Posterior Body Cavity
A major body cavity located on the posterior side of the body, subdivided into the cranial cavity and vertebral cavity.
Cranial Cavity
A cavity located within the skull that protects the brain.
Vertebral Cavity
A cavity located within the vertebral column that protects the spinal cord.
Thoracic Cavity
The division of the anterior body cavity located superior to the diaphragm, containing the pleural cavities, mediastinum, and pericardial cavity.
Pleural Cavities
Subdivisions of the thoracic cavity that each surround either the left or right lung.
