Sample
A subset of people or elements that represent the research topic target population.
Sampling
process of selecting subset of target population
Population
A well-defined set with specific properties, which may consist of humans, medical records, or specimens.
Target Population
The whole group you want your results to apply to.
Accessible Population
available population that meets criteria
Representative Sample
A sample that has the same key characteristics as the entire target population.
Inclusion Criteria
Aka eligibility criteria, specific standards used to determine who is eligible to participate in a study.
Exclusion Criteria
AKA delimitations, standards used to exclude who is not allowed in study
Nonprobability Sampling
A sampling strategy where participants are not selected randomly, making the sample less representative and less generalizable.
Probability Sampling
A sampling strategy that uses randomization, giving each individual an equal chance of being selected.
Convenience Sampling
nonprobability sampling method, selects most easily accessible people or objects, greater risk of bias.
Quota Sampling
A nonprobability sampling method that uses population characteristics to create groups (strata) and proportionally represents each group in the sample
Purposive Sampling
AKA purposeful sampling, a nonprobability sampling method where researcher picks specific people for a reason.
Network Sampling
Nonprobability sampling method of finding participants by asking people you already know to help you find other people.
Simple Random Sampling
probability sampling technique. researcher lists everyone in population and randomly selects some participants..
Stratified Random Sampling
probability sampling technique where the population is divided into groups (strata), and participants are randomly selected from each group.
Cluster Sampling
A probability sampling technique, population is divided into groups (clusters), random clusters are selected, and everyone in the selected clusters is included.
Multistage Cluster Sampling
cluster sampling method that uses random sampling of groups (clusters) in stages, from large to small groups
Random Sampling
recruitment process where everyone in population has equal chance of being selected
Random Assignment
Also known as randomization, the process where participants have an equal chance of receiving the intervention
