Baucis & Philemon 1-11

Iuppiter huc specie mortali cumque parente

Jupiter came here in human form and with his parent

venit Atlantiades positis caducifer alis.

Came the grandson of Atlas, the staff-bearer, laying aside his wings.

mille domos adiere locum requiemque petentes,

A thousand homes did they approach, seeking a room and a place of rest;

mille domos clausere serae; tamen una recepit,

a thousand homes were locked with bolts; however, one received them,

parva quidem, stipulis et canna tecta palustri,

a little one indeed, covered with straw and marsh reed,

sed pia Baucis anus parilique aetate Philemon​

but dutiful Baucis, an old lady, and Philemon, of a similar age,

illa sunt annis iuncti iuvenalibus, illa

in that house were united in youthful years, in that house

consenuere casa paupertatemque fatendo

they grew old and, by admitting their poverty,

effecere levem nec iniqua mente ferendo;

and by bearing it without a discontented mind, they made light of it;

nec refert, dominos illic famulosne requiras:

and it makes no difference if you ask for masters or slaves there;

tota domus duo sunt, idem parentque iubentque.

the two of them are the whole household, the same ones obey and give orders.
