Organizational change
Any alteration of people, structure, or technology in an organization.
Change agent
Someone who acts as a catalyst and assumes the responsibility for managing the change process.
VUCA
An acronym standing for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.
Calm waters metaphor
A description of organizational change characterized by unfreezing the status quo, changing to a new state, and refreezing to make the change permanent.
Kurt Lewin's three-step change process
A model illustrating that successful change requires unfreezing the status quo, changing to a new state, and refreezing to make the change permanent.
White-water rapids metaphor
A description of change where the lack of environmental stability and predictability requires that managers and organizations continually adapt and manage change actively to survive.
Organizational development (OD)
Change methods that focus on people and the nature and quality of interpersonal work relationships.
Sensitivity Training
A method of changing behavior through unstructured group interaction.
Survey Feedback
A technique for assessing attitudes and perceptions, identifying discrepancies in these, and resolving the differences by using survey information in feedback groups.
Process Consultation
An organizational development technique where an outside consultant helps the manager understand how interpersonal processes are affecting the way work is being done.
Intergroup Development
An organizational development technique aimed at changing the attitudes, stereotypes, and perceptions that work groups have about each other.
Team Building
Organizational development activities that help team members learn how each member thinks and works.
Creativity
The ability to combine ideas in a unique way or to make unusual associations between ideas.
Innovation
Taking creative ideas and turning them into useful products or work methods.
Disruptive innovation
Innovations in products, services, or processes that radically change an industry's rules of the game.
Breakthrough innovation
An innovation that creates a market where one did not exist before.
Sustaining innovation
Small and incremental changes in established products rather than dramatic breakthroughs.
Ideation
The process of finding or creating new ideas.
Incubation
The process of testing and validating an idea.
Idea champion
An individual who actively and enthusiastically supports new ideas, builds support, overcomes resistance, and ensures that innovations are implemented.
Design thinking
Approaching management problems as designers approach design problems.
Crowdsourcing
Relying on a network of people outside of the organization for ideas via the internet.
Clarify for inspiration
The first step of design thinking, which starts with developing a clear problem statement focused on finding the best outcome and learning about the user through research, empathy, and observation.
Business Model Canvas (BMC)
A framework consisting of building blocks that innovators use to validate new ideas and explore how an idea creates value for customers.
Skunk works
A small group within a large organization, given a high degree of autonomy and unhampered by corporate bureaucracy, whose mission is to develop a project primarily for the sake of radical innovation.
