The use of economic, political, or cultural pressure to control or influence other countries. (especially former colonies) EX: Africa
Shatterbelts
Regions that are deeply divided by conflict because they’re caught between the interests of powerful states. (These areas are politically unstable and often experience violence or shifting alliances)
Choke Points
Narrow geographic areas like straits or canals that are strategically important for trade and military power. (Whoever controls these gains enormous power. Control over these routes allows countries to influence global oil supplies and military access)
Cultural Identity
Ties people to specific regions. Ethnic groups may see a certain land as their homeland, even if they don’t currently control it.
Economic Interest
Land that holds value because of it’s natural resources, transportation routes, and strategic locations. Countries protect farmlands, coast lines, oil fields, and mining areas.
