what are the 4 magnetic materials
Iron
steel
colbalt
nickel
what are magnetic materials defined as
magnetic materials are those that are attracted or repelled by a magnet
If all things have electrons what make magnetic materials different
in metals that are magnetic the electrons are pulling in the same direction
what are permanent magnets
for example steel
steel magnets have their domains aligned meaning they constantly pull in the same direction and will pull any magnetic materials towards them
what is induced magnetism
e.g. paperclip
magnetic materials that are not magnets as they do not have their domains permanently aligned
however when brought near a magnet their domains align temporarily meaning they can temporarily act like magnets themselves
describe a method to make a weak magnet (paperclip)
hold a magnet and use it to pick up a single paperclip
it should be attracted to either pole of the magnet
see if you can pick up a second paperclip using the bottom of the first one still attached to the magnet
their first magnet should act as a weak magnet as the electrons should still be lined up
describe a method to make a weak magnet (iron nail)
bonus draw a diagram for this
stroke a nail with a magnet in a circular motion
this should cause the domains of the nail to begin to align
it should become a weak magnet
draw diagram for this
anything that has an electrical current running through it…
has a magnetic field surrounding it
what is the rule about poles
opposite poles attract
like poles repel
