Atrial Contraction
A phase where atrial pressure is greater than ventricular pressure, allowing blood to flow into the ventricles, associated with the P wave.
Isovolumetric Contraction
A phase where ventricular pressure rises with all valves closed, critical for building pressure to overcome aortic pressure, preceded by the QRS complex.
Ejection Phase
A phase where ventricular pressure exceeds aortic pressure, causing the aortic valve to open and blood to be ejected.
Isovolumetric Relaxation
A phase where ventricles relax and ventricular pressure drops, with all valves closed to allow pressure equalization.
Rapid Filling
A phase beginning with mitral valve opening, allowing rapid filling of the ventricles from the atria due to a pressure gradient.
P wave
Represents atrial depolarization and corresponds to atrial contraction.
QRS Complex
Represents ventricular depolarization and signals the start of systole.
T wave
Represents ventricular repolarization, leading to relaxation (diastole).
Lub
The first heart sound, indicating the closure of mitral and tricuspid valves during isovolumetric contraction.
Dub
The second heart sound, indicating the closure of aortic and pulmonary valves during isovolumetric relaxation.
Mitral valve closure
Occurs when ventricular pressure exceeds atrial pressure.
Aortic valve opening
Occurs when ventricular pressure exceeds aortic pressure.
