Neurocranium
The portion of the skull enclosing the brain, formed by the superior aspect of the skull and consisting of eight bones.
Viscerocranium
The facial skeleton consisting of 14 individual bones that support facial muscles, house the orbits, oral and nasal cavities, and anchor teeth.
Calvarium
The roof of the neurocranium, composed of the frontal bone, occipital bone, and two parietal bones.
Cranial base
The floor of the neurocranium composed of six bones: sphenoid, frontal, ethmoid, occipital, parietal, and temporal bones.
Atlas
The first cervical vertebra upon which the skull rests, allowing a nodding motion.
Axis
The second cervical vertebra upon which the atlas shifts to permit side-to-side movement.
Maxilla
A paired facial bone that covers the upper jaw and hard palate, and contributes to the floor of the orbits and lateral walls of the nasal cavity.
Zygomatic bone
Paired cheekbone that joins with the sphenoid, frontal, temporal, and maxilla bones.
Nasal bones
Paired slender bones located at the bridge of the nose.
Lacrimal bones
Paired bones located in the medial wall of the orbit, designated as the tiniest bones of the face.
Palatine bones
Paired bones located at the back of the oral cavity that contribute to the hard palate and nasal cavity.
Inferior nasal conchae
Paired individual scroll-like bones located within the nasal cavity.
Mandible
The single, unpaired lower jaw bone that connects with the cranium base at the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
Vomer
An unpaired bone that makes up the posterior slant of the nasal septum.
Frontozygomatic suture
The suture on the lateral orbital wall where the frontal process of the zygomatic bone articulates with the frontal bone.
Zygomatic arch
An arch formed by the articulation of the temporal process of the zygomatic bone with the zygomatic process of the temporal bone.
Zygomatic eminence
An area of thickened bone produced where the fourth process of the zygomatic bone joins the maxilla on the lateral wall, commonly used for fixation in ZMC fractures.
Pterion
An H-shaped suture region on the lateral side of the skull junctioning the frontal, parietal, sphenoid, and squamous temporal bones.
Paranasal sinuses
Small hollow areas located in the frontal, sphenoid, ethmoid, and maxilla bones that decrease skull weight and enhance voice resonance.

Viscerocranium bones (Anterior view)
Diagram highlighting the major visible facial bones: Zygomatic (blue), Maxilla (red), Nasal (yellow), Lacrimal (purple), and Mandible (green).

Sphenoid bone landmarks
Anatomical view displaying the Body, Lesser wing, Greater wing, Pterygoid process, Optic canal, Superior orbital fissure, Foramen rotundum, Foramen ovale, and Foramen spinosum.

Zygomatic bone structure
Diagram illustrating the Frontal process, Temporal process, Infraorbital margin, and Zygomaticofacial foramen.

Temporal bone divisions
Lateral diagram showing the Squamous part, Zygomatic process, Tympanic part, Styloid process, and Petromastoid part.

Mandible structure (Lateral view)
Diagram showing the Head, Neck, Coronoid process, Ramus, Mandibular foramen, Angle of the mandible, and Body.
