Volvox
A protist that can only produce energy using photosynthesis, moves using flagella, and works together with other cells of its species.
Euglena
A protist that can produce energy using photosynthesis or obtain energy by eating other organisms, and moves using flagella.
Amoeba
A protist that does not have a definite shape, only gets energy by eating other organisms, and moves using pseudopods.
Paramecium
A protist that moves using cilia and only gets its energy by eating other organisms.
Pseudopods
A mode of locomotion characterized by cytoplasmic extensions used by amoebas to move.
Flagella
Whip-like structures used for locomotion by protists such as Euglena and Volvox.
Cilia
Short, hair-like projections used for locomotion by paramecia.
Freshwater Protist Habitat
The aquatic environment in which Euglena, paramecium, amoeba, and volvox can all be found.
Cell
The fundamental unit that makes up all living things, existing in different shapes and sizes and arising only from pre-existing cells.
Hereditary Information
Genetic instructions passed from cell to cell in living organisms.
Unicellular Organism
A single-celled organism, demonstrating that not all living things contain many cells.
