Shakespeare presents the role of women as being maternal and nurturing, whilst demonstrating that Lady Macbeth is capable of embodying these qualities.

However, Shakespeare also presents Lady Macbeth as believing her feminine qualities were not compatible with her ambition and desire for power.
However, Shakespeare also presents the Jacobean role of women as being restrictive, as Lady Macbeth believes she has to suppress her feminine qualities in order to gain power.

Lastly, Shakespeare suggests that the restrictive role of women limits their access to traditional forms of power, forcing Lady Macbeth to manipulate Macbeth in order to gain power over him.
Whilst Lady Macbeth rejects her femininity, she still uses conventional ideas about masculinity to exploit and manipulate Macbeth.
