1
New cards

A computer file that behaves like an actual computer.

Virtual Machine

2
New cards

The process of creating a software-based version of a computer is called __________.

Virtualization.

3
New cards

It provides the necessary allocation and management of resources for virtual machines.

Hypervisor.

4
New cards

Bare Metal Hypervisor/ Native Hypervisor

Type 1 Hypervisor is also known as __________.

5
New cards

One benefit of using Virtual Machines is __________ because they can run multiple operating systems on the same machine.

Flexibility.

6
New cards

It facilitates communication between the guest OS and the hypervisor.

Hypercalls

7
New cards

The first step to install a virtual machine

Open the virtual box and click the new button.

8
New cards

Virtual machines offer benefits such as cost savings, agility, and __________.

Security benefits.

9
New cards

A ___________ runs on the underlying host system.

Hosted Hypervisor (Type 2)

10
New cards

A type of hypervisor that runs directly on the underlying host

Native Hypervisor / Bare Metal Hypervisor

11
New cards

It behaves like the monitor entry and reroutes the instructions for the virtual machine instance to one of the two modules.

Dispatcher

12
New cards

Responsible for deciding the system resources to be provided to the virtual machine instance.

Allocator

13
New cards

These are executed, whenever a virtual machine executes a privileged instruction.

Interpreter

14
New cards

A virtualization technique that presents a software interface to the virtual machines that is similar, yet not identical, to the underlying hardware-software interface.

Paravitualization

15
New cards

Allows guest operating systems (OSs) installed on a virtual machine (VM) to communicate and manage resources with the hypervisor, creating a collaboration environment.

Paravirtualization

16
New cards

The communication between the guest OS and the hypervisor is done through hypercalls, which are instructions that the guest OS uses to request from the hypervisor.

Emulation

17
New cards

Types of Emulation

High-level & Low-level

18
New cards

Simulates the functions of the hardware (faster but less compatible)

High-level

19
New cards

Simulates the hardware of the target system as closely as possible (more accurate but also demanding)

Low-level

20

Steps in installing a virtual box

  1. Open virtual box and click the new button to create a new virtual machine

  2. Enter a name for the virtual box machine, select the type of operating system you want to install, and then select the version. Click next to continue.

  3. Set up your username and password and select ”next”.

  4. Allocate a portion of the ram to the virtual machine. You can go with the recommended amount or allocate a little more, but make sure you don’t allocate less than the recommended amount or more than half the size of your physical ram. Click next to continue.

  5. Create a virtual hard drive as shown below, you can go with the recommended amount or allocate a little more, but make sure you don’t allocate less than the recommended amount or more than half the size of your storage.

  6. Click “Finish“ and start the virtual machine and select the ISO file to boot from it and install your operating system

21
New cards

A program that provides partitioning, isolation, or abstraction.

Virtualization Hypervisor
