Long-term memory
Hermann Ebbinghauss
Father of studying memory, pure memory and forgetting through experiments
The Memory Theory
States that the first introduction of the information in our brain, the retention is low, but as the time passed by it gradually decline
The Forgetting Curve
The first 20 minutesโ9 hours is forgettable
The Spacing Effect
States that a study session that is spread out is much more retainable than 1 block
The Serial Position effect
States that the beginning and the ending are much more memorable than the middle part
Active Recall
Forcing yourself to remember through test, quiz and mock exams rather than re-reading the material
Spaced Repetition
before the knowledge is about to fade, review it.
Encoding
Initial process of memory. It requires perception, to register information through memory.
Storage
Retention of the encoded information
Retrieval
Getting the stored information out of the memory
Forgetting
Inability to retrieve a piece of information.
Retrieval Failure
Inability to recall the stored information
Decay Theory
States that the stored memory in the long-term memory disintegrates when it is not been used
Retroactive
old information blocking new ones
Proactive
new Information blocking old ones
