Vesicle

small fluid filled blister (chickenpox herpes)

Pustule

Type of infected vesicle, pus filled (acne)

cyst

Enclosed sac deeper under skin fluid, air, or pus trapped

Scale

epidermal thickening

Macule

flat discolored area of skin (less than 1cm), freckles, birthmarks, melanoma

Papule

elevated lesion with no visible pus (similar to pustule)

Wheal

itchy raised skin, sign of inflammation or allergy (hives/welts)

Nodule

larger solid elevated tissue with no fluid filling (cyst contains fluid filling), associated with HPV warts

Tumor

irregular tissue growth, known as epithelioma, can or cannot be cancerous

Arterial ulcer

caused by block blood flow to the legs (PAD), wounds are dry, punched out, with defined edges (increase profusion to legs)

Venous Ulcer

caused by blocked blood return by veins (PVD), causes blood pooling and swelling in the legs. Wound appears to be wet with irregular edges (compress and elevate legs)

Telfa

anti-adhesive dressing used on wounds with minimal drainage (lacks absorbance)

Gauze

Sticks to wound but has high absorbency for wounds with high drainage

transparent dressing

Used on minor or intentional wounds that aren’t infected, keeps wound moist and promotes healing

Penrose drain

open drainage system that allows for blood, pus, or other fluid to freely drain using gravity (passive drainage)

Jackson-pratt drain

closed drainage system using gentle vacuum suction by squeezing a bulb then closing it. (negative pressure) smaller resivour for drainage

hemovac

closed drainage system, squeezing spring loaded device creates vacuum suction (negative pressure) larger reservoir for drainage
