Mutualism
A relationship where both organisms benefit from and depend on one another to a certain extent.
Escherichia coli (E. coli)
A bacterium in the human intestine that obtains nutrients from human food and produces vitamin K.
Vitamin K
A substance produced by E. coli in the human intestine that is essential for blood clotting in humans.
Synergism
A subcategory of mutualism where two organisms work together to achieve a result neither could obtain alone.
Trench mouth
A disease caused by the combined action of Fusobacteria and spirochetes working together.
