Cornea
The clear outer surface at the front of the eye through which incoming light waves first enter.
Pupil
The opening situated in the center of the iris that allows light waves to pass into the lens.
Iris
The colored circular structure surrounding the pupil at the front of the eye.
Lens
The transparent structure located behind the pupil and iris that focuses light waves onto the retina.
Retina
The multi-layered tissue lining the back of the eye that contains photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) and neural cells for processing visual input.
Fovea
A central region on the retina where light waves converge for focused visual reception.
Blind spot
The area on the retina where the optic nerve departs the eye, devoid of photoreceptor cells.
Optic nerve
The nerve fiber bundle exiting the back of the eye that carries visual signals toward the brain.
Rods and cones
The specialized photoreceptor cells located in the deep layer of the retina that capture light waves.
Ganglion cells
The retinal neurons whose axons converge and extend to form the optic nerve.
