Conductor
A material that allows electric charge to move through it easily, characterized by low electrical resistance.
Insulator
A material that strongly resists the motion of charge, with high resistance so that essentially no current flows under normal voltages.
Resistivity (ρ)
An intrinsic property of a material that quantifies how strongly it resists the flow of electric current.
Resistance ($R$)
The opposition to the flow of electric current, calculated as R=ρAL.
Ohm's Law
A fundamental principle stating that the voltage ($V$) across a conductor is equal to the product of the current ($I$) and the resistance ($R$): $V = I R$.
Voltage Drop
The reduction in voltage in the electrical circuit between the source and the load due to resistance.
Electrolytes
Substances that conduct electricity via the movement of ions, commonly found in battery operation.
Short Circuit
An unintended path in an electrical circuit that allows current to flow outside the intended route, often resulting in excessive current.
Current
The flow of electric charge, typically measured in amperes (A).
Series Circuit
A circuit configuration where components are connected end-to-end, so the same current flows through each component.
Parallel Circuit
A circuit configuration where components are connected across the same two nodes, so each branch has the same voltage.
Equivalent Resistance ($R_{eq}$)
The total resistance of a circuit, which can be calculated differently for series ($R_{eq} = R_1 + R_2 + ...$) and parallel configurations (Req1=R11+R21+...).
Voltage Division
The principle that in a series circuit, the total voltage is divided among the components according to their resistances.
Fault Tolerance
The ability of a system to continue functioning even if one or more components fail.
Time Constant (τ)
A measure of the time it takes for a response to a step change to reach approximately 63.2% of its final value, calculated with τ=RC for RC circuits or τ=RL for RL circuits.
Impedance ($Z$)
The total opposition to current flow in an AC circuit, which includes both resistance and reactance.
Flyback Diode
A diode connected in parallel with an inductive load that allows current to continue flowing when the load is switched off, preventing voltage spikes.
Grounding
The process of connecting electrical systems to the ground to ensure safety and stabilize voltage levels.
Series-Parallel Circuit
A circuit that contains elements connected in both series and parallel configurations.
Power Budgeting
Calculating the power requirements of a system to ensure that sufficient power supply and distribution are available.
High-Current Paths
Sections of a circuit that are designed to carry large amounts of current without overheating or causing voltage drop.
Schematic Diagram
A symbolic representation of an electrical circuit that shows how components are connected and indicates the flow of current.
Transients
Brief changes in current or voltage in an electrical circuit, often caused by sudden changes in the circuit's conditions.
Current Inrush
The initial surge of current when equipment is first powered on, often exceeding normal operating current.
Contamination
Unwanted substances that can create unintended conductive paths, particularly in high voltage systems.
Resistance Heating
The generation of heat in a conductor when current flows through it, proportional to the square of the current and resistance: $P = I^2 R$.
