Define Tensile Strength?
Is the amount of stress that can be withstood by a material when stretched out.
What are the 3 main ways materials behave under stress?
Malleability, creep and Fatigue
Define Malleability in materials?
How easy to shape a material and can be hammered into a sheet.
Define creep in materials?
Is the gradual deformation of a material under constant tensile stress that is lower than the yield strength.
What can cause creep in materials?
Can be caused by a material deforming under its own stress. E.g Tiles can creep over time leading to leakages
Define fatigue in materials?
Is the deformation and ultimate fracture of a material due to a repeated loaded (cyclic) force that is placed on it.
What is the Yield stength of a material?
Is the stress value at the yield point. This is the y-coordinate of the yield point.
What is the Fracture Strength of a material?
Is the stress value at the fracture point. This is the y-coordinate of the fracture point.
Define the Ultimate tensile strength?
The maximum stress a material can withstand at any point while the load is applied to extend it.
What is Equal in Brittle materials?
Yield strength, Fracture strength and Ultimate tensile strength are all equal.
