What are groups in a periodic table
Groups in a periodic table have 1-18 vertical columns and elements within the group share certain physical and chemical properties
What are periods?
Periods on the periodic table contain 7 horizontal rows
What are alkali metals?
Alkali metals are the six elements in group one and are soft enough to be cut by a knife though are extremely reactive (like potassium in water)
What are halogens?
Halogens are a group of five non-metallic elements found in group 17 of the periodic table and are extremely reactive
What are noble gases?
Noble gases are a group of seven chemical elements in group 18 of the periodic table and have low amounts of reactivity
What are compounds?
Compounds are pure substances made up of two or more elements that are chemically combined
What is an ionic compound?
An ionic compound are chemical substances made up of oppositely charged ions held together by forces called ionic bonds. This is where cations and anions come in
What is a molecular compound?
A molecular bond is a chemical substance made up of two or more nonmetal atoms that share electrons through a covalent bond
Difference between ionic and molecular
The difference between ionic and molecular bonds is the bonding mechanism, physical properties and energy. Molecular compounds contain low amounts of energy and involves the sharing of electron pairs while ionic contains high amounts of energy and the transfer of electrons.
Ionic compounds are also formed between a metal and a non metals while molecular is formed by nonmetals only
What are metals?
Metals are solids that conduct heat and electricity well, shine when light is present and can be hammered or stretched into different shapes
What is a metalloid?
A metalloid is a chemical element with physical or chemical properties that fall in between those if non metals and metals
What is a non metal?
A non metal is a chemical element that lacks the typical shine, strength, and conductivity of a metal
