The system that creates mental representations of the world and controls mental functions

e.g. Pushing the ‘J’ key when a light comes on the left, or the ‘K’ key when a light comes on the right

Mental responses can’t be measured directly, but must instead be inferred from behaviour.
i.e. When measuring the relationship between the presentation of the stimulus and the participant’s response, he inferred how long they took from the reaction times instead of measuring responses

Structuralism
An approach to psychology that explained perception and experiences as the sum of small, elementary units called sensations.
Analytic introspection
A procedure used by early psychologists in which trained participants described their experiences and thought processes in response to stimuli.
e.g. Participants were asked to describe their experience of hearing all the notes of a 5-note chord played on the piano
Savings
A method Ebbinghaus used in his forgetting curve to determine the magnitude of memory remaining after initial learning; higher savings indicate greater memory.

Is calculated by: Savings = (Original time to learn the list) − (Time to relearn the list after the delay)
e.g. If it took 1,000 seconds to learn the list the first time and 400 seconds to relearn the list after the delay, the savings would be 1,000 − 400 = 600 seconds

Classical conditioning
A procedure in which pairing a neutral stimulus with a stimulus that elicits a response causes the neutral stimulus to elicit that response.
e.g. Pavlov’s meat powder experiment
B.F Skinner’s Operant conditioning
Focuses on how behaviour is strengthened by the presentation of positive reinforcer stimuli
e.g. Skinner showed that reinforcing a rat with food for pressing a bar maintained or increased the rat’s rate of bar pressing

It influenced an entire generation of psychologists and dominated psychology in the United States from the 1940s through the 1960s, and saw multiple forms of use across classrooms, treatments, experiments, etc

When schemas progress up towards the higher cortical areas
Bottom-up processing
Processing that’s initiated by stimulation at the end of the nervous system

Processing that’s initiated by generation of schemas by the higher brain structures

Proposed by Frederick Barlett in 1932, where different people may sometimes perceive stimuli differently based on their experiences

Skinner argued that children learn language through operant conditioning
e.g. They imitate speech they hear, and that speech is rewarded

He saw language development as being determined by an inborn biological program that holds across cultures, and as a product of the way the mind is constructed
