Brandt line
A line that separates the world into the Rich North and Poor South.
More Economically Developed Country (MEDC)
A developed country with high levels of income that offers greater access to healthcare and education, which improves overall quality of life.
Less Economically Developed Country (LEDC)
A developing country with lower levels of income, low-quality healthcare, and limited education and job options, where high crime, unemployment, and low technology slow down development.
Quality of Life
Refers to general well-being, including healthcare, education, environment, and social services.
Standard of Living
Refers to material well-being, including wealth, saving, housing, and personal possessions.
Development Indicators
Statistics and information used to measure development, divided into economic, social, and demographic indicators.
Economic Indicators
Indicators that measure Gross National Product (GNP), Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, GDP, sector contributions, and employment levels.
Social Indicators
Indicators that measure human and social progress, such as the Human Development Index (HDI), Gini Coefficient, and Human Poverty Index (HPI).
Demographic Indicators
Indicators that measure population statistics, such as birth rate, death rate, life expectancy, and infant mortality.
Gross National Product (GNP)
The total value produced by a country's citizens and business worldwide.
Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
The total value of goods and services produced in a country per year.
GDP per capita
The average income earned by all people in a country, calculated as PopulationGDP.
Human Development Index (HDI)
An index that measures and ranks a country's human development by looking at life expectancy, literacy, education, and standard of living.
Gini Coefficient
Measures the degree of inequality, where a score close to 0 indicates equal income distribution (developed) and close to 1 indicates unequal distribution (developing).
Human Poverty Index (HPI)
An index that measures the level of poverty in a country.
Life Expectancy
The average number of years a person is expected to live.
Infant Mortality
The number of babies who die before their first birthday.
Community Based Development
Projects run and executed by the local community to improve their own quality of life, which are often NGO-led and rely on local effort and knowledge, but face the risk of failing due to a lack of funding.
