Valence electrons
Electrons in an atom whose count can vary from 0 to 8.
Atomic number
The number that indicates not only the number of protons in an element, but also its number of electrons.
Valence octet
The configuration achieved when an element possesses 8 valence electrons.
Alkaline earth metals
The elemental family comprising the Group 2 elements.
Transition family
The family of elements to which titanium (Ti) belongs.
Halogens
The chemical family whose elements each have 7 valence electrons.
Lanthanide and actinide series
A group also designated as rare earth elements because they comprise less than 0.01% of the Earth's elements.
Synthetic elements
All elements located beyond uranium on the periodic table.
Periodic properties
The tendency of elemental properties to repeat at regular intervals across the periodic table.
