Network
A group of two or more computers linked together to communicate and share resources.
Stand-alone computer
A computer that is not part of a network and requires secondary storage media for data transfer.
Local Area Network (LAN)
A network connecting microcomputers or workstations within a limited area, like a school or office.
Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
A high-speed network that connects multiple LANs in a metropolitan area, like a city.
Wide Area Network (WAN)
A network covering a large geographic area, connecting multiple LANs and typically using various communication means.
Personal Area Network (PAN)
A computer network connecting devices within the range of an individual, commonly within 10 meters.
Modem
A device that converts signals between analogue and digital for communication over telephone lines.
Advantages of networks
Benefits include sharing hardware, storage media, software, and facilitating communication among users.
Disadvantages of networks
Drawbacks include high initial costs, data corruption risks, virus spread, and potential server failure impact.
Server
A computer that runs software allowing client computers on a network to communicate and share resources.
