Connective tissue
The most diverse and abundant class of tissue, characterized by few cells surrounded by substantial amounts of extracellular matrix or matrix
Extracellular matrix
Has two main component: protein fibers and ground substance
Reticular fibers
Are very fine and arranged into a branching framework in soft tissues
Collagen fibers
Are strong and have a rope-like structure
Elastic fibers
Have the ability to stretch and return to their original shape
Fibroblast
Most common and is responsible for producing the extracellular matrix
Stroma
A framework of connective tissue that supports the cells within a tissue or organ
Chondrocytes
Are cartilage cells
Lacunae
Are spaces where chondrocytes are found
OSTEONS (Haversian systems)
Are structures in dense bone with a significant amount of matrix and few spaces
Central canal
A space at the center of an osteon that contains blood vessels and nerves
Osteocytes
Are cells within the lacunae
Leukocytes
White blood cells
Erythrocytes
Red blood cells
Platelets
Are formed elements of blood involved in blood clotting
Perikaryon (soma)
Is the cell body of a neuron and contains the typical organelles, including the nucleus
Epidermis
Is the thinner, more superficial layer of the skin, comprised of keratinized, stratified squamous epithelium
Dermis
Is the thicker, deeper layer of the skin, comprised of connective tissue
