Flashcards covering the classification of vertebrates and invertebrates, the five classes of vertebrates and their characteristics, and the various functions of animal tails.

What is an animal's tail an extension of?
An animal's tail is an extension of its spine (its backbone).

What is the difference between vertebrates and invertebrates?
Vertebrates are animals with spines, while invertebrates are animals without spines.

What are the five classes of vertebrates?
Mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, and amphibians.

What are the general characteristics of mammals?
Mammals have hair or fur, do not lay eggs, and the females feed their babies milk.

What are the general characteristics of reptiles?
Reptiles have dry skin, have scales, and lay eggs.

What are the general characteristics of birds?
Birds can fly, have feathers, and lay eggs and sit on them until they hatch.

What are the general characteristics of fish?
Fish live in water, breathe through gills, have fins, have scales, and lay eggs.

What are the general characteristics of amphibians?
Amphibians have smooth, wet skin, lay eggs, and their babies, called tadpoles, are born in the water and develop legs as they grow.

What are baby amphibians called, and where are they born?
They are called tadpoles, and they are born in the water.

How do birds use their tails during flight?
Their tails keep them steady in the air and help them slow down before landing.

How does a monkey use its tail to get around?
A monkey uses its tail to hold on to tree branches and jump from one branch to another.

How do snakes use their bodies and tails to move?
Snakes use their whole bodies, including their tails, to crawl from one place to another.

How do fish use their tails in the water?
Fish wave their tails, along with their fins, to swim around in the water.

Why does a peacock show off its tail?
A peacock shows off its tail to attract females.

How does an iguana use its tail for defense?
An iguana strikes out at enemies with its tail.

Is the statement 'All animals have a spine' true or false?
False, because invertebrates do not have spines.

Is the statement 'All invertebrates crawl' true or false?
False.

To which class of vertebrates do cats, frogs, salmon, and snakes each belong?
Cats belong to mammals, frogs belong to amphibians, salmon belong to fish, and snakes belong to reptiles.
