The 5 Steps of the Process of Communication
1.) Sender & Idea
2.) Encoding
3.) Channel + Noise
4.) Decoding
5.) Feedback
Noise and Distortion
They are physical, psychological, or semantic barriers that interfere with accuracy at any stage of the communication cycle.
The Communication Loop
It is where communication is bidirectional -- effective feedback that transforms linear transmission into a continuous dialogue.
The 2 Types of Communication
1.) Interpersonal
2.) Intrapersonal
Interpersonal Communication
It is where one source it talking to another source face-to-face.
Intrapersonal Communication
It is where the source talks to themselvse.
Mass Communication
It is where one source communicates to another source through media/gadgets.
The 7 C's of Effective Communication
1.) Clear - be clear about the goal and the purpose of your message
2.) Concise - keep the point and keep your message short and simple
3.) Concrete - be clear, not fuzzy! provide detail, but not too much detail
4.) Correct - make sure your message is accurate and grammatically correct
5.) Coherent - make sure your message flows well and lays out logically
6.) Complete - ensure the recipient has everything they need to understand
7.) Courteous - your message should be polite, friendly, professional, and open
The 4 Barriers of Communication
1.) Psychological
2.) Linguistic
3.) Cultural
4.) Physical & Tech
Psychological
This includes international mental states and emotional conditions that filter message perception.
(Ex: emotional stress, defensiveness & ego)
Linguistic
This includes mismatches in language word choice, and contextual meaning between parties.
(Ex: complex industry jargon, ambiguous or vague word choice)
Cultural
This includes divergent social norms, values, and workplace hierarchy dynamics.
(Ex: differing non-verbal cues, diverse communication styles)
Physical & Tech
This includes environmental obstacles and technology failures disrupting transmission.
(Ex: background noise and distance, information overload)
The 4 Ways to Overcome Communication Barriers
1.) Fostering active listening.
2.) Adopting clear and inclusive language/s.
3.) Encouraging open feedback channels.
4.) Utilizing reliable technology.
Euphimism
It is the polite conversion of a mean statement.
(Ex: They are poor --> They are financially unstable.)
Lingua Franca
It is a language that can be understood by 2 parties.
Semantic Noise
It is the other term for linguistic noise.
(Ex: This girl is agnostic.
Agonistic is not a common word! Therefore, some people don't understand it.)
Channel Noise
It is the noise interrupting the communication.
Lasswell's Model
It evaluates mass communication through 5 direct questions.
- Who: Communicator/Sender
- Says What: Message Content
- In Channel: Medium (ex: tv, radio, print, etc.)
- To Whom: Audience/Receivers
- With Effect: Outcome/Impact
Berlo's SMCR Model
It dissects the psychological and sensory variables influencing the sender and receiver.
- Source (S) -> skills, attitude, culture
- Message (M) -> content, elements, code
- Channel (C) -> human senses
- Receiver (R) -> skills, attitude, culture
The 3 Parts of Aristotle's Model of Communication
1.) Ethos
2.) Pathos
3.) Logos
Ethos
- It is establishing trust.
- It shows credibility and character.
Pathos
- It is stirring feelings.
- It shows emotional connection.
Logos
- It is a logical argument.
The 5 Linear Components of Aristotle's Model
1.) Speaker
2.) Speech
3.) Occacion
4.) Audience
5.) Effect
The Principle of Redundancy
It ensures the message fidelity, resolves communication breakdowns, and engineers clear signals in noisy environments.
The 4 Parts of Intrapersonal/Personal Context
1.) Internal dialogue
2.) Emotional regulation
3.) Self-awareness
4.) Core goal
The 4 Parts of Interpersonal Context
1.) Two-way exchange
2.) Relational empathy
3.) Shares meaning
4.) Core goal
