Wave function (ψ)
A mathematical expression containing information about each orbital and the wavelike properties of electrons in an isolated atom.
Hybridization
The process of combining the wave functions for atomic orbitals to produce new mathematical descriptions with different shapes.
LCAO
Linear combination of atomic orbitals; the technique used to mathematically accomplish hybridization.
Hybrid orbitals
The new orbitals that result from the linear combination of atomic orbitals when atoms are bound together in a molecule.
Oxygen valence electron configuration
1s22s22p4, featuring two unpaired electrons in two redundant 2p orbitals.
Water (H2O) experimental bond angle
104.5∘, which contradicts the 90∘ angle predicted by the simple overlap of perpendicular p orbitals.
Tetrahedral bond angle
109.5∘, the angle predicted when five valence orbitals in an oxygen atom are described as four equivalent hybrid orbitals.
