Corporate Colony
A type of colony organized and operated by joint-stock companies under a charter from the king.
Royal Colony
A type of colony under the direct control and authority of the king.
Proprietary Colony
A type of colony under the authority of individuals who were granted ownership and land charters by the king.
Joint-Stock Company
A business entity that pooled funds from multiple investors buying shares of stock to finance colonial ventures and spread financial risk.
Roanoke Colony
The first attempted English settlement in North America, which ultimately failed and became known as the Lost Colony.
Jamestown
The first permanent English settlement in North America, established in 1607 in Virginia by John Smith and the Virginia Company.
House of Burgesses
The first representative legislative assembly in the English colonies, established in Virginia.
Mayflower Compact
An agreement written in 1620 by the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony, establishing an early form of colonial self-government.
Massachusetts Bay Colony
A colony founded in 1630 by John Winthrop and Puritans, structured as a strict religious community described as a 'City upon a hill.'
Plymouth Colony
A colony founded in 1620 by Separatist Pilgrims led by William Bradford seeking religious freedom.
Maryland Colony
A Southern proprietary colony founded by Lord Baltimore as a haven for Catholics.
Georgia Colony
