Turbine Engine
The complete powerplant assembly that encompasses all operating sections from intake to exhaust.
Turbine Section
A specific subsection within the engine located downstream of the combustion chamber, consisting of turbine wheels and stators that extract mechanical energy from hot expanding gases.
Compressor Stage
Exactly one set of rotor blades plus one set of stator blades constitutes one compressor stage.
N1
Low-Pressure Compressor subsection in a dual-spool engine, located forward.
N2
High-Pressure Compressor subsection in a dual-spool engine, located aft and operating at higher rotational speeds.
Diffuser
A section that decelerates high-velocity compressed air to convert dynamic velocity into higher static pressure, preventing blowout of combustion flames.
Cold Section
Comprises the air intake, compressor subsection(s), and the diffuser.
Hot Section
Comprises the combustion section, turbine section, and exhaust section.
Can-Type Combustion Chamber
Features individual cylindrical burner cans arranged circumferentially around the engine shaft.
Annular Combustion Chamber
A continuous, single, round outer canopy forming a circular chamber without individual cans inside.
Turbine Stage
Composed of one set of stationary turbine stators plus one set of rotating turbine blades mounted on a turbine wheel.
Thrust Generation
The rearward expulsion of hot gases creates forward reaction thrust in accordance with Newton's third law of motion.
Axial-Flow Engine
An engine where air travels straight through the engine parallel to the longitudinal rotational axis.
Centrifugal-Flow Engine
An engine that uses rotating impellers to accelerate air radially outward into diffusers.
Turboprop Engine
A core jet engine coupled to an external propulsion propeller.
Turbofan Engine
Replaces the conventional propeller with a multi-bladed fan disc enclosed within a protective aerodynamic cowl.
Auxiliary Power Unit (APU)
A compact jet engine mounted internally within the airframe, providing utility power without propulsion.
Ground Power Unit (GPU)
A mobile turbine core identical in configuration to an APU used to supply power to parked aircraft.
Industrial Turboshaft
A gas turbine core mounted on the ground, generating zero propulsive thrust, used for utility applications.
Afterburner
A hollow exhaust duct that injects fuel into turbine exhaust to produce supplemental thrust.
Engine Pressure Ratio (EPR)
A measure of total thrust output calculated by comparing turbine discharge total pressure to compressor inlet total pressure.
