Statutory Law
Law based on the constitution, made by governmental bodies like congress, can be federal, state, or local.
Common Law
Also known as 'Case Law', it consists of a body of laws made up of judicial opinions and precedents.
Civil Law
Referred to as 'Private Law', it deals with relationships between individuals and assigns blame instead of intent.
Criminal Law
Known as 'Public Law', it pertains to offenses against individuals and society, where the state acts as the plaintiff.
Equity Law
Also called 'Preventative Law', it addresses issues that common or case law does not touch, such as injunctions.
Administrative Law
Regulates the establishment, duties, rules, and powers of government administrative agencies.
Plea Bargaining
An agreement where a defendant pleads guilty to a lesser charge in exchange for dropping more serious charges.
Miranda Rights
Rights that inform a suspect of their right to remain silent and to an attorney, to protect against self-incrimination.
Frye Standard
Scientific evidence must be provided by an expert witness and have general acceptance in that field of study.
Daubert Ruling
Scientific techniques must be testable, follow standards, be peer-reviewed, and generally accepted in the scientific community.
