Diffusion
The movement of particles or molecules from an area of high concentration to and area of low concentration
Semi-permeable membrane
A thin barrier that allows certain molecules or ions to pass through while blocking others
Concentration gradient
The difference in the concentration of a substance between two connected areas, influencing the movement of molecules during diffusion
Osmolarity
The measure of solute concentration in a solution
Osmosis
The movement of a solvent(water) through a semi-permeable membrane from an area of low solute concentration to an area of high solute concentration
Hyper-osmotic/ hypertonic
A fluid that has a higher concentration of solutes compared to a cell's cytoplasm, resulting in a net movement of water out of the cell across the cell membrane
Hypo-osmotic/ hypotonic
A fluid that has a lower concentration of solutes compared to a cell's cytoplasm, resulting in a net movement of water into the cell across the cell membrane
Iso-osmotic/ isotonic
A fluid that has the same concentration of solutes as a cell's cytoplasm, resulting in no net movement of water across the cell membrane
Plasmolysis
The shrinking of the cytoplasm and plasma membrane away from the rigid cell wall of a plant cell due to water loss in a hypertonic environment
