Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
A mental health disorder characterized by obsessions (intrusive thoughts) and compulsions (ritualistic behaviors) that aim to relieve anxiety.
Obsessions
Excessive, unwanted, intrusive thoughts, impulses, or images causing anxiety and distress.
Compulsions
Repeated behaviors performed in a ritualistic fashion to prevent or relieve anxiety caused by obsessions.
Latent prevalence
The lifetime prevalence of OCD is approximately 1.2%.
Diagnose
Identifying OCD involves the presence of obsessions or compulsions and patient recognition that thoughts and actions are excessive.
Psychopharmacology
The study of the use of medications in treating psychological disorders; includes medications such as Clomipramine and SSRIs.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
A therapeutic approach aimed at changing thought patterns to improve emotional regulation and develop personal coping strategies.
Trichotillomania
A disorder characterized by chronic hair pulling resulting in noticeable hair loss.
Excoriation Disorder
A skin-picking disorder associated with repeated picking of the skin, leading to noticeable damage.
Body Dysmorphic Disorder
A mental disorder involving obsessive focus on perceived flaws in appearance.
