Cell
The fundamental structural and functional unit of all living organisms.
Cell theory
The scientific theory stating that all living organisms are composed of cells, the cell is the basic unit of life, and all cells arise from pre-existing cells.
Cryogenic electron microscopy
A technique in electron microscopy where biological samples are rapidly frozen at cryogenic temperatures to preserve their natural structural state for high-resolution imaging.
Cytoplasm
The gel-like fluid inside a cell, enclosed by the plasma membrane, in which organelles and cellular components are suspended.
Deductive reasoning
A logical process in which a specific conclusion is drawn from general principles or premises.
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid; the hereditary material in organisms that carries genetic instructions for development, functioning, and reproduction.
Electron microscope
A type of microscope that uses a beam of accelerated electrons as a light source to achieve high magnification and resolution.
Field of View
The maximum area visible when looking through the eyepiece or lens of a microscope.
Freeze-fracture
A specimen preparation method for electron microscopy where a frozen sample is physically fractured to expose internal cellular structures and membranes.
Immunofluorescence
A microscopy technique that utilizes fluorescently labeled antibodies to detect and visualize specific target molecules within a specimen.
Inductive reasoning
A logical process where broad generalizations or theories are formed based on specific observations and evidence.
Light microscope
An optical instrument that uses visible light and glass lenses to magnify images of small biological specimens.
Magnification
The degree to which an image of an object is enlarged relative to its actual size.
Multicellular
Describing an organism consisting of multiple, specialized cells working together.
Objective lens
The lens on a microscope positioned closest to the specimen that produces the primary magnified image.
Ocular lens
The lens located at the top of a microscope eyepiece that further magnifies the image produced by the objective lens.
Plasma membrane
A selectively permeable lipid bilayer with embedded proteins that surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell.
Resolution
The ability of a microscopic imaging system to distinguish two separate points as distinct entities, determining image clarity.
Ribosome
A complex cellular organelle composed of RNA and protein that serves as the site of protein synthesis.
Scale
A ratio or reference marker showing the relationship between the size of a drawn or imaged object and its actual real-world dimensions.
Unicellular
Describing an organism consisting of a single independent cell that carries out all life functions.
Wet mount
A slide preparation method where a specimen is placed in a drop of liquid (such as water or stain) on a glass slide and covered with a coverslip.
