What is the three processes for decreasing/increasing salinity?
Evaporation, conductivity meter, calibration curve
What is the impact of increasing/decreasing salinity in regards to density?
Increasing salinity means an increase in density, more mass per volume meaning density increases while decreasing in salinity means a decrease in density, less mass per volume meaning density decreases
How do you identifying Latitude Longitude coordinates of a location on a world map?
Latitude=North and South for instance 50* NorthSpr or 50* South
Longitude=West and East, for instance 50* South or 50* East
Combine both to go 50* N, 50* E
What is the spring date for the Northern hemisphere?
March 20
What is the spring date for the Southern hemisphere?
September 22
What is the summer date for the Northern hemisphere?
June 20
What is the summer date for the Southern hemisphere?
December 21
What is the fall date for the Northern hemisphere?
September 22
What is the fall date for the Southern hemisphere?
March 20
What is the winter date for the Northern hemisphere?
December 21
What is the winter date for the Southern hemisphere?
June 20
Where do volcanoes occur in regards to tectonic plates?
Convergent boundaries, specifically subduction zones
Where do earthquakes occur in regards to tectonic plates?
Transform and convergent boundaries
Where do trenches occur in regards to tectonic plates?
Convergent boundaries
Where is subduction found in regards to plate boundaries?
Convergent boundaries
Where is continental collusion found in regards to plate boundaries?
Convergent boundaries
Where is spreading ridges found in regards to plate boundaries?
Divergent boundaries
Where are continental rifts found in regards to plate boundaries?
Transform boundaries
What is density?
Mass/volume
What is downwelling?
Water sinking to the bottom of the ocean and is replaced with warm water
What is salinity?
Dissolved solids (ions) in water
What is the oceanic crust?
Most dense layer among the layers involved in subduction, this is the crust that subducts
What is an active margins?
Tectonic activity occurs here, lack of a rise
What is a passive margin?
No tectonic activity occurs here, flat large shelf
What is latitude?
North and South
What is longitude?
East and West
In terms of isostacy, what happens to the crust if the density increases or decreases?
If the crust density increases, the crust sink further into the water (isostasy), if the crust density decreases, the crust rises up more in the water (isostasy)
What is the motion of a convergent boundary?
Towards each other, one subducts
What is the motion of a transform boundary?
Both slide past each other in opposite directions
What is the motion of a divergent boundary?
Away from each other
What bonds are within water?
Hydrogen bonds and Covalent bonds
Which continental crust is the most dense?
Oceanic crust
Which continental crust is moderately dense?
Continental crust
Which continental crust is the least dense?
Mountain ranges
What are the “great circles”?
All the longitudes plus the equator
What are the small circles?
All the latitude minus the equator
