Niche
A unique role or job that a species has in its ecosystem.
Prey
An organism in an ecosystem that is hunted and consumed by a predator.
Predators
An organism in an ecosystem that survives by predation (catching and consuming another organism called prey).
Competition
Organisms fighting or competing for resources, or a type of interaction where 2 or more species target the same prey.
DNA
The genetic code for an organism's growth and development.
Abiotic Factors
The non-living parts of a biome.
Herbivore
Diet based on plants.
Carnivore
Diet based on meat or other animals.
Energy
Basic ingredient required for survival; cannot be created or destroyed, exists in various forms and can be transferred; The ability to do work.
Population
A group of individual organisms of the same species that live in the same area.
Community
All different populations in an area.
Ecosystem
A geographic area where organisms interact with each other and the abiotic factors in the area; the complex of a community of organisms and its environment functioning as an ecological unit.
Survival
The ability of an organism to keep living in the face of danger.
Social
Hunt or travel in groups.
Solitary
Hunt or travel solo - hunt or travel alone.
Reliance
The state of trusting, depending on, or needing someone or something for help or support.
The Herd
Group of organisms which live together and protect each other.
The Calf
A young Buffalo (symbolizes a weaker organism in a herd).
Stealth
The ability to remain undetected by predators or prey.
Response to Stimuli/Sensitivity
An organism's response to its environment; movement toward or away from environmental triggers.
Heterotroph
Receives energy from sources that are alive/used to be alive (eats animals and plants).
Autotroph
Receives energy from sources that are not alive (the sun/photosynthesis).
The Battle at Kruger
Battle between Lions and some other animals demonstrating biological traits.
Traits
Specific characteristics of an organism of species inherited from the previous generation of that species.
Selective Advantage
A trait that an organism has to reproduce and survive better than other members of the same population.
Patterns
A design, shape, or event that repeats in a logical and predictable way.
Trophic Level
Position in the food chain.
Fat/Lipid
Lipids are a large group of natural organic compounds that do not dissolve in water. Fats are a specific type of lipid, known as triglycerides, that are usually solid at room temperature.
Protein
A macronutrient used for the construction of muscles, enzymes, immune defense molecules and more.
Carbohydrate
Organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen that serve as a primary source of energy for living organisms.
Calorie/Kilo Calorie
Unit of energy measured in food, stored in food molecular and chemical bonds.
Basal Metabolic Rate
The amount of calories you need to survive without eating or moving. Around 2000 for women and 2500 for men.
Food chain
A linear sequence of organisms through which energy and matter move as one living thing eats another. Interconnected food chains make a food web.
Metabolism
A series of chemical reactions turning energy in food into energy we can use.
Kjeldahl Method
Method used by scientists to determine the amount of protein in food.
Kilocalorie/Large Calorie
A large calorie/a food calorie (1000 calories), the amount of energy needed to heat 1 kilogram of water up 1oC.
