juxtaposition

the placement of two or more things side by side, often to emphasize differences

tone

the perspective or attitude that the author has about the subject

diction

the choice of words a writer uses; author’s voice in writing

ambiguity

When a word, sentence or story is unclear, vague or has multiple meanings

syntax

the arrangement of words and phrases in a sentence;  Sentence structure, word order and punctuation.

Irony

The opposite of what we expect; the difference between how things seem to be and reality.

metaphor

Compares two unlike things with a similar trait (does not use the word like or as)

analogy

A type of comparison  in which an idea or a thing is compared to another thing that is quite different from it. It aims at explaining that idea or thing by comparing it to something that is familiar.

connotation

the associations people make with words that go beyond the literal or dictionary definition. Negative, positive or neutral

paradox

a statement that contradicts itself and still seems true somehow

Style

The way a writer writes; depends upon one’s syntax, word choice, and tone. It can also be described as a “voice” that readers listen to when they read the work of a writer.

a short statement of principle or truth
